SUCCESS STORY: RES Suite Solutions Supporting Workload Scheduler Migration
A US health insurance organization successfully migrated its mainframe workload scheduler to HCL Workload Automation, a distributed scheduling solution. Thanks to RES’ methodology, the support of RES Suite solutions and the collaboration with HCL, the transition was carried out in a controlled manner, reducing licensing costs, minimizing manual intervention and shortening the overall migration timeline.
THE CONTEXT
The client is a major health insurance organization based in Rhode Island, USA. Its information system primarily relies on a mainframe environment used to manage critical operational processes and a large number of scheduled jobs.
In this context, the workload scheduler played a key role in day-to-day operations. The migration process therefore required particular attention to business continuity and the effective management of the existing scheduling assets.

THE CHALLENGE
The client needed to replace its existing workload scheduler, as licensing costs had become unsustainable, and move from a mainframe-based solution to a distributed scheduler.
The main challenge was to ensure a complete and reliable migration within a complex mainframe environment, while minimizing the impact on daily operations and reducing manual activities, which are more prone to error.
THE SOLUTION
RES IT, working in collaboration with HCL, managed the entire migration process from the existing mainframe workload scheduler to the new distributed solution, supported by RES Suite and, in particular, Docet.
The approach included:
- creating a complete snapshot of the source environment to map the existing scheduling assets and correctly plan the migration activities;
- customizing the migration tool to achieve an automation rate of 99%;
- carrying out the migration through batch processing, minimizing manual activities and making the process more repeatable and easier to control;
- conducting a testing phase to validate all migrated jobs and verify the accuracy of the process before deployment to production.
Docet, part of RES Suite, supports software documentation and qualitative analysis through application mapping, impact analysis, KPI assessment and development best-practice compliance checks.
THE BENEFITS
Reduced licensing costs
The client significantly reduced workload scheduler-related costs, improving the financial sustainability of its IT infrastructure.
Shorter migration timeline
The overall migration time was reduced by approximately 50% compared with traditional methodologies.
A more reliable and repeatable process
Batch processing and the comprehensive validation of migrated jobs helped make the process more controlled, reliable and repeatable.
Business continuity during the transition to the distributed environment
The workload scheduler migration was carried out while preserving the continuity of daily operations and maintaining control over the transfer of jobs to the new distributed environment.
